Shakopee ISD 720
The Shakopee Public Schools serve 5,800 students in a rapidly growing, diverse community. The district opened a new high school for grades 10-12 in the fall of 2007. Shakopee Junior High moved grades 8 and 9 into the former Senior High, and a newly created Shakopee Middle School began serving all students in grades 6 and 7 in the former grade 7-9 building. A fifth elementary school opened as well, and all five elementary schools serve kindergarten through grade 5.
The elementary curriculum provides students with the basic skills necessary to achieve success in subsequent years, plus enrichment, extension and remediation activities that address the needs of individual students. Instruction is provided in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, health and physical education.
Technology is integrated throughout. The secondary curriculum offers students in grades 6 through 12 a wide range of courses and learning experiences to suit their individual needs and interests. Shakopee’s performance expectations are designed to ensure that all graduates have mastered the basics and are prepared for post-secondary opportunities — college, technical school or work.
A growing number of classes at the high school level offer college credit and pre-Advanced Placement courses are being implemented at the middle level. Each elementary has a full-time high potential teacher, with two teachers covering grades 6-12. Special education services are offered from infancy.
To improve the achievement of all students, the district analyzes student data and establishes measurable improvement goals. Students in grades 2-9 are tested in the fall and spring using a computerized standardized test system. The testing results allow parents, students and teachers to monitor a student’s progress. The results are also used to help design curriculum-improvement plans.
New curriculum is adopted district-wide on a six-year cycle. Staff committees study each curriculum area and report findings to the district-wide Curriculum Advisory Council. The Council, which includes community members, makes recommendations to the School Board.
