Shakopee is also home to the Stans Historical Center in which the Maurice Stans collection and the county historical society collection are housed. Development has benefited from the easy flow of traffic across the river since the 1995 opening of the new Bloomington Ferry Bridge. With easier access, residential development has surged ahead especially in the Southbridge area south of Hwy. 169. Today, it is estimated that nearly 31,000 people call Shakopee home — making it the fastest-growing city in the Twin Cities metro area.

The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children. The city also has an extensive park system and the adjacent Minnesota Valley Wildlife Trail is a nature-lover’s treasure.

Licenses and Permits
Dog Licenses
Dogs, aged six months or older, must be licensed in the City of Shakopee. Licensed dogs are to wear the license tag number on their collars.
Any dog found in the city without a tag or running at large can be impounded. Cats may also be impounded for running at large. If the owner of an impounded animal is known, notification of impoundment will be given. All dogs and cats placed in the city pound shall be held for redemption by the owner for five regular business days.

Building permits are required for most projects, including decks, swimming pools, porches, re-roofing and finishing basements. Call the building department for more information.

Peddlers’ licenses are required, except for charitable, religious, educational and political organizations registered with the MN Secretary of State. Applicants should apply for a license at least 10 days before planning to use it. There is a fee.

Winter Parking

During the winter season, Shakopee has both calendar parking and designated Snow Emergency Route restrictions.

Summer Lawn Watering

Summer lawn watering bans and limitations apply from May 1 through Oct. 1. Lawn sprinkling is on an “odd-even” basis, with no sprinkling from noon to 5 p.m. Call the Shakopee Public Utility Commission for more information at 952-445-1988.
